Orlando Sings Seeks Conductor for Youth Choral Artists

Orlando Sings invites applications for a Conductor for the Orlando Sings Youth Choral Artists, its advanced choral program for singers in grades 6–12.

The Conductor will serve as the primary conductor of one OSYCA ensemble—Aurora, a treble choir, or Lux, a mixed choir—and as assisting conductor of the other. Working in close artistic partnership with OSYCA Director and Conductor Brianna Martin and Orlando Sings Artistic & Executive Director Andrew Minear, the successful candidate will help shape an ambitious, joyful, and welcoming program for Central Florida’s young singers.

This is a meaningful artistic leadership position. Each OSYCA conductor leads one ensemble, assists with the other, and contributes substantially to repertoire selection, auditions, singer placement, instructional planning, concerts, and the long-term development of the program.

About Orlando Sings Youth Choral Artists

The mission of the Orlando Sings Youth Choral Artists is to cultivate the next generation of singers through artistic excellence, meaningful community, and transformative musical experiences. We inspire young musicians to grow as vocal artists, confident leaders, and lifelong lovers of music.

OSYCA includes two advanced ensembles of equal importance, rigor, and artistic distinction:

  • Aurora: Treble choir for sopranos, altos, and unchanged voices
  • Lux: Mixed choir for sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses

Both ensembles serve singers in grades 6–12 and explore challenging, multi-genre repertoire while developing vocal technique, musicianship, expressive artistry, confidence, and collaboration.

Primary Responsibilities

The Conductor will:

  • Serve as the primary conductor of one OSYCA ensemble and as assisting conductor of the other.
  • Plan and lead engaging, artistically rigorous rehearsals.
  • Develop singers’ vocal technique, music literacy, ensemble skills, musical independence, and expressive artistry.
  • Select varied and appropriate repertoire in collaboration with OSYCA and Orlando Sings artistic leadership.
  • Prepare singers for concerts, shared Orlando Sings performances, the Orlando Sings Choral Festival, and other special opportunities.
  • Participate in auditions, singer placement, recruitment, and program planning.
  • Assist the other conductor through sectionals, vocal coaching, rehearsal support, and shared performances.
  • Cultivate a welcoming, disciplined, and youth-centered ensemble culture.
  • Build positive relationships with singers, families, school choral directors, private teachers, and community partners.
  • Support students’ continued participation in their school and community music programs.
  • Uphold Orlando Sings policies regarding student safety, professional conduct, communication, and confidentiality.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Successful experience teaching and conducting adolescent singers.
  • Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral repertoire, rehearsal technique, and developing voices.
  • Excellent conducting, aural, score-preparation, and communication skills.
  • Functional keyboard skills sufficient for score preparation and rehearsal support.
  • The ability to inspire young musicians while maintaining high artistic and educational standards.
  • A generous and collaborative approach to shared artistic leadership.
  • Dependability, strong organization, and professional communication.
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Orlando Sings.

A bachelor’s degree in music education, choral conducting, vocal performance, or a related field is expected. Advanced study or equivalent professional experience is welcomed. Final appointment is contingent upon successful completion of required background screening and youth-safety training.

Schedule and Location

Regular rehearsals are held on Thursdays at All Saints Episcopal Church, 338 East Lyman Avenue, Winter Park, Florida:

  • Aurora: 5:30–7:00 p.m.
  • Lux: 7:15–8:45 p.m.

The Conductor should be available for the full Thursday rehearsal period, as well as scheduled concerts, auditions, retreats, meetings, and special events.
